How to Test Your Webcam
- Open the tool and start the camera. If your browser asks for camera access, choose Allow.
- Check the live preview. A green LIVE badge appears at the top left of the video when the camera is active.
- Pick the right camera. If you have more than one, use the Select Camera Device dropdown (for example, “Integrated Webcam”).
- Read your results. The tiles below the video show your webcam status, resolution, quality standard, frame rate, aspect ratio, and camera name.
- Click Stop Camera when you are done.
If the video appears and the status says Working, your webcam is functioning.
What You Can Do With This Tool
Mirror View
This flips the preview horizontally, like a mirror. A Mirrored badge shows when it is on. It is useful when you are checking your framing, because moving left or right feels natural in a mirrored view. Click Mirror View again to switch back.
Take Photo
This captures a still image from your camera so you can check image quality, sharpness, and colour.
Fullscreen
This expands the preview so you can inspect the video in more detail.
Switch Between Cameras
The device dropdown lets you compare cameras, such as a built-in laptop webcam and an external USB one, without leaving the page.
Understanding Your Webcam Test Results
| Result | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Webcam Status | Shows “Working” when the camera feed is active. |
| Resolution | The size of the video in pixels, for example 1280 × 720. |
| Quality Standard | A label for that resolution, such as HD (720p). |
| Frame Rate | How many frames per second the camera delivers, for example 15 FPS. A higher number generally looks smoother. |
| Aspect Ratio | The shape of the video, for example 16:9 (widescreen). |
| Camera Name | The device the browser is using, so you can confirm it is the right one. |
Check the Camera Name tile first if the image looks wrong. If it names a different device than you expected, select the correct one from the dropdown.
When to Use a Webcam Test
- Before a video call or interview: confirm your camera works and your framing looks right.
- After buying or plugging in a new webcam: check its resolution and frame rate against what the box promises.
- After a driver or system update: make sure the camera still works.
- When comparing cameras: switch devices and compare image quality side by side.
- When troubleshooting: find out whether the problem is the camera itself or the app you were using.
Tips for a Better Webcam Test
- Test in the lighting you normally use. Dim rooms can make the image look dull or grainy, and a lamp facing you often helps.
- Check the background and framing. Make sure your face is centred and nothing unwanted is in view.
- Use Take Photo to judge quality. A still image makes it easier to spot blur or colour issues than live video.
- Test each camera separately. If you own several, select them one at a time and compare the resolution and frame rate shown.
Webcam Not Working? What to Try
- Allow camera access in your browser’s site permissions.
- Close other apps that may be using the camera, such as video call software.
- Choose a different device from the dropdown.
- Reconnect an external webcam, or try another USB port.
- Reload the page and start the camera again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my resolution differ from what my webcam is advertised as?
The tool shows the resolution of the feed your browser is currently receiving. If it is lower than expected, check that the right camera is selected under Select Camera Device.
Is 15 FPS a problem?
It depends on how you use the camera. A higher frame rate usually looks smoother, so compare the value across your cameras to see which performs better.
What does 16:9 mean?
It is the widescreen shape of the video: 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. Most modern HD webcams use it.
Does Mirror View change how others see me on a call?
The tool only describes Mirror View as a preview option, so check the settings in your video call app to see how it handles mirroring.
Can I test an external webcam?
Yes. Plug it in, then pick it from the camera dropdown. Its name should appear in the Camera Name tile.
