Mouse Tester: Check Every Button and the Scroll Wheel

Is your mouse double-clicking by itself? Does a side button feel dead? This Mouse Tester shows you what your mouse actually sends to the browser, so you can check it without guessing.

Click the test box, press any button or scroll the wheel, and the tool records each action instantly.

What This Mouse Tester Checks

The tool tracks eight actions with separate counters:

  • Left click
  • Right click
  • Middle click (pressing the scroll wheel)
  • Double click
  • Side back (the “Back” thumb button)
  • Side forward (the “Fwd” thumb button)
  • Scroll up
  • Scroll down

A mouse diagram in the test box shows where each button sits. The X and Y readout at the top right shows your pointer position inside the box.

How to Test Your Mouse

  1. Click inside the dashed test box. The status line at the top changes once testing starts.
  2. Press the buttons you want to check, one at a time.
  3. Watch the mouse diagram. Each button lights up while you hold it.
  4. Check the counters below the box. Each press should add exactly one count to the right counter.
  5. Scroll up and down to test the wheel.
  6. Press Reset to set all counters to zero and start again.

Use Copy results to copy your counts. This is handy if you want to share them with a seller, a support team or a friend helping you troubleshoot.

How to Spot a Faulty Mouse Button

The tool gives you two clear signs of a problem:

  • A button does not light up when you press it. The click may not be registering.
  • One press counts twice. This often shows up as unexpected numbers in the Left click or Double click counters.

For a reliable check, press one button ten times slowly. You should see exactly ten counts. If the number is higher, or the button sometimes fails to light up, that button may be faulty.

Practical Tips for Better Testing

  • Test one button at a time. Mixed clicks make the counters harder to read.
  • Press slowly first, then at your normal speed. Some faults only appear during quick clicking.
  • Test the scroll wheel in both directions. Compare the Scroll up and Scroll down counts after the same number of scroll steps.
  • Check the side buttons separately. Many people forget them, and they are a common source of “not working” complaints.
  • Run the same test before and after cleaning or changing settings, so you can compare results.

When This Tool Is Useful

  • Checking a new mouse before the return window closes
  • Inspecting a second-hand mouse before you buy it
  • Finding the cause of accidental double clicks while browsing or gaming
  • Confirming that side buttons and the wheel click work
  • Collecting results to show a seller or support team

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a “Double click” in this tool?
It is a separate counter for double-click actions. Use it to see whether a single physical press is being registered as a double click.

My side buttons show no response. Does the mouse have a fault?
Not necessarily. First check whether your mouse has side buttons at all. If it does and they still don’t light up here, the buttons may be faulty. You can also try another browser or computer to narrow down the cause.

Does Reset delete anything permanent?
No. Reset sets the on-screen counters back to zero so you can start a new test.

What does Copy results do?
It copies your current test counts so you can paste them into a message, a support ticket or a note.

Why does the Middle click counter not change when I scroll?
Middle click counts a press of the wheel, not its rotation. Rotating the wheel updates Scroll up or Scroll down instead.

Why do I need to click the box before testing?
Testing starts when you click inside the box, as the status line says. Clicks outside the box are not part of the test.
